NORTHSIDE ASSEMBLY OF GOD - CHURCH HISTORY - PASTOR GREG COOPER
Northside Assembly of God in Dothan, Alabama, located at 645 Rodney Road, was founded in 1988, by Billy and Ruth Mendheim, with help from family, as a church with a mission to impart God's word not only within the walls of the church and sanctuary, but Internationally in support of missions around the world. Since that time, the church has prospered under the leadership of several pastors, who too worked to fulfill the call of God upon their lives.
ABOUT BILLY AND RUTH MENDHEIM - FOUNDNERS OF NORTHSIDE ASSEMBLY OF GOD
Missions and reaching the lost for Jesus Christ the one true God, was placed by God's calling upon the Mendheim's heart. By Faith, Billy and Ruth helped build other church's in Florida, and knew God would help them build, found, and pioneer the work God called them to do at Northside Assembly of God.
"Without any pay", the Mendheim's worked in "hard labor and love", constructing (yes, with Billy actually nailing, roofing, constructing, ect....all for free), and both over seeing (preaching, teaching, management), working through and forward with God's plan. Always striving to hold true to God's word, will, and ways. They used their own money, with help from attending family.
Billy Mendheim (now a church Elder and Deacon), over saw the church food bank program (recently closed), for many, many, years, still reaching out in God's love to the surrounding community at large. Though older now, both Billy and Ruth, who are married close to 60 years, are still alive today, strong in faith and serving God. Holding true to the precepts of God's word, The Holy Bible.
ELDERS IN THE CHURCH
What Does the Bible say About Church Elders?
The Elders in the Body of Christ are laborers. Timothy 3:1, "this is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop [or elder], he desireth a good work."
Timothy 5:17-19, Let the leaders that rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially they who labour in the word and doctrine. For the scripture saith, thou shall not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The Labourer is worthy of his reward. Against an elder receive not an accusation, but before two or three witnesses.
Acts 20:17, "And from Miletus [Paul] sent to Ephesus, and called the elders of the church." Paul called them together for consultation about their ministry, what should and how work in the church was to be done.
James 5:14-15, confirms Elders praying for the sick.
Is any sick amount you: Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord; and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up.
Titus 1:5-6, "For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain olders in every city,... if any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly.
DEACONS IN THE CHURCH
We can read about the first church deacons chosen in Acts 6: 1, 3-4: And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multipled, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration... Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word.
Seven men were chosen to be deacons "and when they had prayed, they laid their hands on them" (v. 6). These deacons were given duties to do within the church.
Timothy 3:8-12: Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre; holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. And let these also first be proved [not novices]; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
Lester Summrall, preacher, teacher, author, wrote of the following true story in his book "The Gifts and Ministries of the Holy Spirit", pg. 250:
"Once I was preaching in what was then the largest Full Gospel church in the world - an enormous church in Stockholm, Sweden." The pastor told him he had resigned the church, though he was its founder. One day he just stood before the congregation and said very simply, "I resign." When the board asked "Why?" He confirmed one of his children (he had eleven) was not living for God. I will resign and stay at home in prayer until he is saved."
Summrall writes, "Immediately, that church body set themselves as one to pray for his son. What was that boy to do when 6,000 church members started praying? He got saved in a hurry! Here was a man who ruled his house well, which is how a deacon is to be."
NORTHSIDE ASSEMBLY OF GOD HISTORY WEBSITE
The writer and editor of the Northside Assembly of God History website, is a charter member of the church, who has been called by God to encourage and impart the wisdom and knowledge within his holy word, the Bible through Internet ministry. "Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth." - John 17:17 And whose life has been touched by the outreach, teaching, ministry, and love for God's word, will and ways, proclaimed and shown by Billy and Ruth Mendheim.
As this author explains, "You see, I am Billy and Ruth's daughter, who has been in the ministry myself since 2007". What my parents have shown me by example through out the years is to never give up on God, because he will never give up on you! Even when they lost their only son, my brother, by horrific death (he was steamed alive in an industrial accident), they cried out to God in tears thanking God for the many years of blessing they had been given while he was alive.
Though not perfect, my parents strive to measure up to God's calling. They have shown me by example in ministry, "Even when it means to place your own self down, live to protect God's word and His church and sheep."
Has God called you to fulfill an ordained mission in life?
The Bible is filled with rich history proclaiming God's power to see you through, as He works to usher in His faith filled plan for your life. May the testimony reports and devotionals written within this website, serve to honor those who, despite hardship, listened to the still small voice of the Holy Spirit, fulfilling God's calling to reach the lost with the salvation message of Jesus Christ and His love, mercy, and grace.
